The 10 members of the Supreme Judicial Council, which met on Monday, could not reach a majority decision and the vote was postponed until Wednesday. The Supreme Judicial Council, which met again yesterday (Friday), elected Supreme Court Judge Bertan Özerdağ, one of its youngest members, as the new president. Narin Ferdi Şefik, who has served for approximately 8 years, will hand over the highest position and duty of the judiciary to Özerdağ.

There were 3 names mentioned as the new President of the Supreme Court in the Supreme Judicial Council, which made its first vote on Monday. The names of Gülden Çiftçioğlu, Bertan Özerdağ and Tanju Öncül were voted in the vote, but since all three names did not reach the quorum, the voting was postponed to Wednesday.
Before the vote on Wednesday, Supreme Court Judge Gülden Çiftçioğlu announced that she was withdrawing from her candidacy in favour of Supreme Court Judge Bertan Özerdağ. In the voting held thereupon, Özerdağ received 6 votes, Öncül received 4 votes, and since the majority vote could not be reached, the election was postponed to Friday. In the voting held again yesterday, Özerdağ received 7 votes and Öncül received 3 votes.

The new president Özerdağ was born in 1974 and was the youngest candidate among the other candidates. Considering that Özerdağ's election will serve until the constitutional retirement age of 65, Özerdağ can be the President of the Supreme Court for approximately 15 years.
The Supreme Judicial Council consists of 12 people and the Supreme Court judges are natural members of the board. Since 2 candidates could not vote in the election, a candidate had to receive the votes of at least 7 people to be elected.
Who is Bertan Özerdağ?
Bertan Özerdağ was born on May 24, 1974 in Nicosia. He graduated from Nicosia Turkish Maarif College in 1992 and Marmara University Faculty of Law in 1996. Between 1998 and 1999, he completed his master's degree and master's degree in European Union and International Trade Law at the University of Essex in England.
He completed his legal internship and registered as a lawyer on October 5, 2000. He practiced law from 2000 to 2006. He was appointed as a District Court Judge on 1 June 2006, as a Senior District Judge of the District Court on 1 October 2010, as the President of the District Court as of 16 September 2014, and as a Supreme Court Judge as of 16 November 2015.
